And as far as he’s concerned, the reward is more than worth the risk.Book Shadow Flight (A Shadow Riders Novel Book 5) Review :
If you took out all of the repeat passages and summaries of past books, I wonder what would be left of this story. After several books building up to the conflict between the hero and heroine, because of her past abuse, we start the book a few years after the last one and suddenly they're completely in love with each other and there's no conflict at all. They basically just spend the rest of the book telling each other how much they love one another. On top of that, this is yet another book about a biker gang, who abuses women and kids, riding into town to get the heroine. Hasn't Christine written this already? Several times? And the Ferraros deal with the whole situation by breaking everyone's necks. I get it, that's their trademark move, but we had chapters and chapters detailing how different family members from New York and LA took out the gang from the shadows. There was never any danger to the heroine or hero, no tension, to drama - the family just dealt with it. I don't know what I read, but it wasn't good. The hero and heroine got their HEA straight away. The bad guy - who they'd been building up throughout the whole book - was dispensed without much of a fanfare, or even a ripple for the heroine. And I got to read passage after passage of how much she loved her foster parents, and how they gave her clothes, and how much she loved her husband, and how caring he was, and what had happened in the past and how she felt about it... over and over and over. There were even whole scenes where characters described in detail things that happened earlier in the book - for the benefit of the other characters. Seriously? That's just lazy writing and editing. I'm so incredibly disappointed with this book. So many of Christine's books are my all-time favorite reads that I visit time and again. But her writing seems to have become erratic over the past few years and there's no longer a guarantee that she'll put out something worth reading - and I say that having read everything she's written. I wonder if she's writing too many books a year? Maybe if she cut back, the standard of every one she puts out would go back up. All I know is that this book was poorly done and that makes me very sad. I have recently read some on the negative reviews on the other books in this series and just don't understand. I love the Shadow Walkers. There are a few inconsistencies throughout the series- for example when we are introduced to Nicoletta in the first book, SHADOW RIDER, she attempts to kill herself with a knife. In this book, the story of Nicoletta's romance with Taviano, the youngest surviving Ferraro brother, the story is recounted as her trying to kill herself with a gun. It's a small discrepancy, but noticable to a fan.I love that, while there is a similar flow to each of the books, the personality of the characters was allowed to evolve. There was an "instalove" aspect that I always enjoy- but because of the personality and background of the characters, I always finish the book believing in a happily ever after.I have been waiting for Nicoletta and Taviano's story since book one and feel like it was worth the wait. Nicoletta starts off as the wild child, a rebel running away from the abuse of her childhood. Taviano is initially seen as just the youngest Ferraro brother, the peace maker. Yet they mesh in a way that works.I loved this book. I enjoyed the partnership that evolved between the two main characters. I was happy that the danger threatening Nicoletta was resolved. The crazy, erratic behavior of Eloisa Ferraro toward her children is somewhat explained. So many loose ends tied up! (Note to Christine- please find a way to save Sandlin- he is too great a character to kill off)Final words- if you have not read this series, I HIGHLY recommend this book (but please read the series in order for maximum enjoyment!) The Ferraro men are NOT always politically correct but they are protective, loyal, loving, intelligent and passionate. Sigh. I want one...
